GH7 vs $100,000 Arri Alexa on a REAL Production
Просмотров 13 тыс.16 часов назад
I got a chance to put the LUMIX GH7 next to the Arri Alexa Mini LF to really see how good the ArriLog is. And quite honestly, I’m impressed with the quality coming out of this camera. Is it a replacement for the Arri? Not in the slightest. But is it a tool to go hand in hand with one? Certainly. I'm sure if you take more time you can really get super close to the ALEXA look. The GH7 seems more contrasty, has definitely a magenta cast (well known from Panasonic sensor) and is really more saturated. For sure, if you dial back the saturation, shift towards green, decrease the contrast and add a bit of glow to soften the image a bit, you are in the ALEXA ballpark for sure. Great to see a real life situation instead of just someone filming a color chart in their backyard, haha! Finally, this is great that you said that it is a very good (and cheap!) alternative when you need a B or C cam on shoot to pair with an ALEXA if you don't have the budget. I thought Micro Four Third was dead but this video just proved me wrong.

    Personally, the only sun shots look way better. IMO, the final shot looks super unnatural to be an outdoor day shot. She is far too separated from the background, almost lit as if she was in the shade, but there is no element in the framing of the shot to suggest she is in the shade. Also the light hitting her hair is coming from the opposite direction of the motivated sunlight adding to the unnatural feel of the shot. This could be nice for a pharmaceutical commercial I guess, but if you're going for a cinematic look, this is a big miss. That being said, Brady does lots of great lighting work, both inside and out (especially at night) and I have gotten plenty of great tips from him. No one gets it right 100% of the time. Also, he is working with some bare bones equipment here. If he broke out his lights and anything else he deemed necessary for a big shoot, I'd image the final image would be way better.

    How come your light is falling only on to the subject and not on the background? I have tried this and the greatest challenge for me is the light fills all over the place including the background and sides too. In many horror films I have seen that the light only illuminates the character and the background is very dark. Can you please explain or make a seperate tutorial on this?

    Maybe it’s just my personal impression, but the dramatic color palette is what actually makes this footage somewhat watchable. Sorry, I’m not trying to be a hater or anything. Your video popped up in my feed and I watched it. I feel like there is a lack of purpose-what’s the story behind it? It’s not fair to say gear doesn’t matter and make a video without meaning. I feel like I need to watch more of your stuff because I’m sure you know what you’re doing.

    The GH7 matches impressively close to the Alexa... it's really an amazing value camera. Footage overall has a bit more of a digital look to it, which is expected, the Alexa sensor will always be more organic and softer than basically all mirrorless sensors. But when cutting the footage together with a proper color grade and watching the final product, no one will ever tell or care about the differences between the two cameras.

    Hey Brady. I’ve been struggling with interiors lately. So my camera doesn’t let me manually dial in what color temperature I want or cant even give it a bump up in warmth or coolness. I can only rely on using a white card. My room for example has tungsten lighting but the windows are daylight. So when I white balance to the tungsten the windows get too blue and my room gets too white when it’s suppose to be a little warm looking. And when I balance to the windows then my windows are white but my rooms tungsten light is way too warm and orange. When I white balance to both of them hitting the same white card I actually get a more accurate reading but I still don’t exactly know why that is and I’m confused on this. I’m basically just winging it. Can you help me understand how to white balance in camera when working with mixed lighting in this case a tungsten source and a daylight source being my windows and getting the correct color from them? Thank you for all your videos

    No mean to be harsh but this particular shot on iPhone film looks interesting only within the context of this video. It doesn't have any interesting story or plot twist or anything that actually makes the film interesting so if this film was uploaded alone as it is, it is not going to be so interesting. In another words, budget does matter for good script writing, copy writing and narrative. Budget is not only about the shooting itself.

    Throw on a PL speed booster and the GH7 is god tier. With 0.71x speed booster, you get an FOV slightly wider than super 35, plus you gain a stop of light. Not to mention all the PL lenses you get access to.

    LUMIX seems to be taking their main camera (S5iiX) and taking pieces away and replacing them with a gimmick like downloadable LUTs or ARRI log C3. It bothers me that people are falling for this. Putting Rosso Corsa paint on a chevy doesn't make it a Ferrari. A tiny, overpriced hybrid camera body with horrible dynamic range that uses tiny lenses cannot ever match a $100,000 cinema camera. Anyone pretending it can is crazy or trying to sell you a GH7. Also... what's the use case here? Somebody that owns both an ARRI and a gh7? Who does that? That's absurd. It's a useless feature that everyone is going on and on about.

    • @3dtrip870
      @3dtrip870 5 дней назад

      There are tons of films that use small form factor cameras for shots that larger cameras are too big for. I don’t think anyone really thinks the GH7 fully replaces a dedicated cinema camera for large budget films. Having a lut to match it with Arri for those times when they do need a smaller camera is a convenience. It’s not a bad thing man, and for a lot of creators this camera is just fine
